A supported process, not a forced return.
Family rejection can be a major driver of youth homelessness. Where a participant wants family engagement, the process can include preparation, mediated communication, boundary setting, safety planning and follow-up.
Safeguarding comes first. Reconciliation is not treated as successful simply because contact resumes. KENJAC staff should assess risk, consent and the young person’s own goals throughout the process.
Possible steps
- Understand the participant’s goals, history and safety concerns.
- Plan what information may be shared and with whom.
- Prepare family outreach or facilitated conversation.
- Agree boundaries, realistic next steps and follow-up.
- Record progress through the authorised SOIMS case-management workflow.
