A Real Talk for Youth Finding Their Place in the World
When most people hear the word “homeless,” they picture someone sleeping under a bridge, in a tunnel, on a street bench, or in an abandoned building. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to live on the streets to be homeless.
Homelessness can mean couch surfing from one friend’s house to another. It can mean staying in unsafe relationships just to have a roof over your head. It can mean feeling unwanted at home because of who you are; your sexuality, gender identity, or simply for being different.
At Kenneth and Jacob’s House, we see you. We get it. And we want you to know “you are not invisible“.
“I was never on the streets… but I was never home either.”
That line from our new video hits deep, doesn’t it? Many of us have been there, smiling on the outside while trying to hold everything together on the inside. Maybe your family kicked you out after you came out. Maybe you’re a young trans person sleeping on a cousin’s couch. Or maybe you’re stuck in a place that doesn’t feel safe, but leaving feels impossible.
Homelessness isn’t just about where you sleep but about how you feel.
If you don’t feel safe, accepted, or stable where you are, that’s homelessness too.
We’re Building Home Beyond Walls
At Kenneth and Jacob’s House, we believe home isn’t just four walls; it’s belonging, safety, and love.
That’s why our programs go beyond shelter. We create spaces where LGBTQ+ youth and others at risk of homelessness can:
Find Safe Housing, Talk It Out, Build Skills & Confidence and Reclaim Power by learning about your rights, how to advocate for yourself, and how to dream again even after trauma.
We’re not just a shelter. We’re a family one that listens, laughs, and lifts you up when life knocks you down.
Watch, Reflect, and Share
After watching “You Don’t Have to Live on the Streets to Be Homeless,” take a moment for you.
Ask yourself:
Where do I feel most at home?
Who makes me feel seen and safe?
What’s one small thing I can do today to move closer to stability or healing?
Drop your thoughts in the comments or share your story anonymously. Your words might help someone else realise they’re not alone.
You Belong Here
Whether you’re in school, sleeping in a shelter, staying with friends, or figuring out your next step you belong here.
Our message is simple:
Home is not a place. It’s a feeling and we’re here to help you find it.
So come hang out with us online, join our peer circles, or DM us if you need someone to talk to. Together, we can build homes out of hope, one story at a time.
