Resilience in Action: Celebrating Progress and Hope on World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day

“As we observe World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day, we at Kenneth and Jacobs House take this moment to reflect on our journey over the past three years and to honor the resilience of the LGBTQIA+ youth we serve. Today, we are proud to launch our annual report, “Resilience in Action: Annual Report 2020-2023,” highlighting our ongoing commitment to ending homelessness among LGBTQIA+ youth in Kenya and addressing the mental health challenges they face.”

Understanding the Crisis

Homelessness among LGBTQIA+ youth is a significant issue in Kenya, often rooted in societal stigma, discrimination, and family rejection. Many young people find themselves without safe shelter, leaving them vulnerable to violence, exploitation, and mental health challenges. At Kenneth and Jacobs House, we recognize that homelessness and mental health are intertwined issues that require a holistic approach to address effectively.

Our Approach

Over the past three years, our team has worked tirelessly to provide safe housing, mental health support, and empowerment programs tailored specifically for LGBTQIA+ youth. Our report showcases the various initiatives we have implemented, including:

  1. Safe Housing Solutions: Over the years we have expanded our services, providing a safe haven for over 200 youth, offering not just a roof over their heads but a sense of community and belonging.
  2. Mental Health Services: Recognizing the unique mental health challenges faced by our youth, we have integrated mental health services into our programs. Through counseling, support groups, and wellness workshops, we aim to foster resilience and promote emotional well-being.
  3. Empowerment and Advocacy: Our empowerment programs equip youth with life skills, vocational training, and advocacy tools, helping them build brighter futures. We believe in empowering our youth to become advocates for change, not just in their lives but within their communities.

The “Resilience in Action” report is more than just numbers; it tells the stories of the incredible young people who have transformed their lives with our support. From securing stable employment to reconnecting with their families, these narratives illustrate the power of resilience and the importance of a supportive community.

Call to Action

On this World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day, we invite you to join us in this critical mission. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, every action counts. Together, we can create a society where every young person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, has the opportunity to thrive.
